Fort Ord's first civilian gas station to break ground
Friday, January 8, 2010
A new Shell gas station next to the Ord Market will break ground on Monday. The Shell station will be the first civilian gas pumps to open on the former military, building upon another "first" for the property, according to the Fort Ord Reuse Authority.
"Ord Market was the first retail business to open for civilian use as part of the regional base reuse program for economic development and recovery following the 1994 closure of the former Fort Ord military base,” said Michael Houlemard, FORA's executive officer, in a prepared statement.
The market is owned by former Seaside councilman Darryl Choates, who has been trying for years to reopen a gas station and car wash originally built by the Army. The market is the closest civilian grocery outlet to the CSUMB campus. The groundbreaking is set for 11am at 2700 Imjin Parkway, Marina.
