Monterey City Council Bans Smoking on Recreational Trail

The Monterey City Council voted unanimously to ban smoking on the city's recreational trail at its Tuesday, Jan 19 meeting

The council didn't vote to ban smoking in parks, because, according to a report by the City Attorney, such a ban could affect camping or barbequing, and because enforcement  could take police away from other duties.

Smoking is already banned within 25 feet of the city's playgrounds.

Monterey recently scored an F on the American Lung Association in California's annual state of tobacco control report card.  The council's action might bring up the city's grade in 2010.
