Budget Dilemma

Donohue calls for new committee to suggest budget fix

Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue today called for the creation of an overarching, budget committee to gather input from various advisory groups and recommend how to plug the city's more than $9 million budget hole.

During his "State of the Budget" address, Donohue compared the city's constant struggle to balance its budget to Groundhog Day. "We got a choice to continue on our present path or to decide that a well-run, efficient city that provides desired services is part of what makes Salinas an attractive community," he said. "I believe it is important to balance the budget more slowly, more wisely, and begin to lay the groundwork for redesigning the Salinas of the future."

Donohue said the new blue-ribbon committee will be named Tuesday, Feb. 2 and it will receive input from other city committees by Feb. 25. The City Council will make preliminary budget cuts and issue layoffs by March 2, with final budget adoption slated for June 15.
