Seaside City Council approves Styrofoam ban.

Soon, perhaps, the dominant foam on Seaside beaches will be from the waves.
On Thursday, Jan. 21, the Seaside City Council unanimously approved the first reading of the city's Environmentally Preferable Food Packaging Ordinance, which if adopted will ban take-out polystyrene containers from Seaside restaurants.
Nine members of the public, including two CSU-Monterey Bay students, spoke in support, and Sustainable Seaside delivered a petition with 92 signatures endorsing the ordinance. A member of the local Latino Merchants Association said the group is open to the ban, but would like more information.
To that end, the Monterey Regional Waste Management District plans to offer free "starter kits" of alternative packaging products to local restaurants and community groups, according to Jeff Lindenthal, MRWMD spokesman. "It was really gratifying to see all the community support," he says.
The council will hold the second reading of the ordinance Feb. 4. (But even if the new law passes, it'll take some concerted beach clean-ups to tackle the abundant Sytrofoam litter along Seaside's shoreline.)
