Bio-Terrorism: A New Wrinkle

MIIS experts warn of black-market Botox

The anti-wrinkle drug Botox contains tiny amounts of the deadly botulinum toxin, and a couple of local experts worry that it could fall into terrorist hands.

Dr. Raymond Zilinskas and Dr. Kenneth Coleman, of the Center for Non-Proliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies hit the headlines today with the results of an investigation that warns of how easy it is to purchase the lethal stuff from counterfeit labs or via the internet.

Allergan, Inc. which controls the Botox market, is on the case.  The company has a clear interest in shutting down potential competitors. But Coleman likens the hunt for bootleg operations to a game of Whack-a-Mole. No sooner do authorities shut one down than another pops up.
