Letters to the Editor for Jul 01, 2010

That was very disingenuous by [running my] letter that alludes to the Weekly being so left that conservative or Republican letters are rarely answered, or in my case, three-quarters of the content removed. I realize that letters can be altered for using bad language, threats or many others things but you folks take the cake. -Gary Black | Marina
Bravo a hundred times over for this piece of writing (“Carly’s Way,” June 10-17)! There must be a way for this to be duplicated on the Web, in other papers, wherever, so that enough people recognize who the candidates really are who say they can serve California as politicians. Between Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman, this has been a worrisome campaign.
Thank you for your words. -Beatrice Siegel | Monterey
BIRD IS THE WORD
I wonder how many of the dedicated volunteers who helped in saving a pelican from the deadly Gulf oil have other birds for dinner or at a local fast-food outlet.
They are not alone. Most people are appalled by the devastation of animal life by the Gulf oil spill, yet subsidize the systematic killing of other animals for their dinner table. They know that meat and dairy harm the environment and their family’s health, but compartmentalize this knowledge when shopping for food.
And it goes beyond dietary flaws. We tolerate the killing of innocent people when our government and media label them terrorists. We ignore the suffering and starvation of a billion people, except when our government and media tell us to care because an earthquake or tsunami has struck.
Our society would benefit greatly from more original thinkers, and our personal diet is a great place to start. -Clarence Wells | Monterey
On behalf of all of us at the Pacific Grove Art Center, thank you so much for your ongoing support of our exhibit openings and special events.
Your coverage makes a big difference to us in terms of attendance, and we greatly appreciate it.
Our June 4th opening attracted almost 700 visitors on what we understand was a rather quiet night for some of the other venues on the Pacific Grove ArtWalk. -Joan Jeffers McCleary, director, Pacific Grove Art Center | Pacific Grove
Thisliberalpresident can’t even fix a huge devastating oil spill three months later. How could he ever defend our country in war? -Kevin O’Connor | Santa Barbara
CORRECTION: A photo caption in the story about the Hands Across The Sand protest (“Throwing Sand In Their Faces,” June 24-30) incorrectly identified Gina Bardoni. She is with the Portola Hotel & Spa, not the Monterey Plaza.
