Missed by a Nose…Republican Sam Blakeslee narrowly missed all-out victory in the special election called to fill now-Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado’s 15th District state Senate seat. He’ll face off against Democrat John Laird and Libertarian and Independent candidates Aug. 17. [RU]
Twice Uprooted…To fix a faulty new valve, Cal Am subcontractor Monterey Peninsula Engineering tore up the same lovingly tended patch of public garden they destroyed last summer. Garden volunteer Mary Wilson rescued some of the plants before the work crew bulldozed a roughly 24-by-11-foot area June 28. [KA]
School Spirit…Monterey Institute and Middlebury College make it official July 1. Although thousands of miles apart, the agreement to join hands stabilizes MIIS financially, sets up cooperative degree programs, and shores up MIIS initiatives like its non-proliferation and terrorism studies program. Anti-Whaling Win?…An attempt to resume legal commercial whaling hit a brick wall at the International Whaling Commission meeting in Morocco June 23. The U.S.-brokered compromise would have lifted a 24-year-old moratorium on for-profit whaling in exchange for enforced hunting limits. [KA]
Wet Appetite…Cannery Row hosted a beer-filled rebirth with the much-anticipated opening of Cannery Row Brewing Company June 23. Bring your lunch…To the November election, that is, where 10 measures have already qualified for the ballot and 54 more are in circulation. One measure would roll back California’s landmark climate change law and another would legalize and tax pot. [RU]
Local Honored…Carmel architect John Thodos posthumously received the American Instititute of Architecture’s highest honor, Fellowship, for design. Thodos is known for several local creations, including Carmel’s Scenic house. [RU]
