Museum Makeover
Monterey City Council considers Monterey Maritime Museum re-model progress.
Monday, July 5, 2010
On Tuesday, July 6, the Monterey City Council will get a glimpse of what the Monterey Maritime Museum will look like when it re-opens in 2011. According to a report submitted to the council, the museum lobby will offer a display of the collections' highlights and an array of model ships. Inside, the museum will explore Monterey history from the indigenous Rumsien people to the military to the artists who've worked in the area, and will include everything from Rumsien baskets to Cannery Row memorabilia to whaling artifacts.
The council requested regular reports on the remodel and on the museum's finances when it granted permission for the temporary closure last year.
The museum has been on shaky financial footing, but a six month budget report for the period ending in April 2010 shows contributions more than doubled compared to the same months last year and that the museum operated in the black, primarily because it sold museum property during the period.
