How can you tell someone’s really a cowboy?

Asked at the California Rodeo Salinas chamber mixer.

Follow-up: What would you want on your belt buckle?

NICK CUNNINGHAM | Olympic bobsledder | Monterey

A: A real cowboy, no matter what fancy boots he might have, also has really dirty work boots and rough hands. And a real cowboy drinks whiskey.

Stud Thud: Anything that says “champion.” But I don’t have one of those yet.

MANDY ROTH | Marketing manager | Salinas

A: Nowadays, a real cowboy doesn’t wear the super-tight Wranglers but instead has a looser cut. You can also tell by the shape of his hat – hard to describe, but it’s there.

Giddyup: It would say “WOO-HAW” in big letters because I like to have a good time.

GARY HUGHES | Plumber | Salinas

A: A pickup truck pulls up to a gate. The guy driving isn’t the cowboy. The guy who gets out to open the gate isn’t either. The cowboy’s in the middle. All a real cowboy does is ride horses.

Lone Star: It’d say “Texas,” like this one here does. I’m always a Texas man at heart.
