Ya Basta…The Board of Supervisors July 13 denounced Arizona's harsh new immigration law, alleging it violates the constitutional right to due process. Lou Calcagno abstained, but the board unanimously approved a second resolution urging Obama to sign a "just and humane" immigration reform bill. [KA]

 

Candidate Showdown…The debate over debates rages in the special August 17 state senate election. Republican Sam Blakeslee says he’s signed up for two outings, but the team behind Democrat John Laird charges those are private confabs, one of which is blatantly partisan. [RU]

 

New Wave…On July 19, President Obama signed an executive order on national ocean policy that local Congressman Sam Farr calls the “Clean Ocean Act.” The order creates a comprehensive framework for conserving America’s Great Lakes, coasts and oceans. [KA]

 

GO!…This weekend, local motorcycle race fans will be treated to the return of nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi, who broke his leg in a crash two months ago. Rossi and crew race in the Red Bull U.S. Moto GP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca July 23-25. [NC]

 

Taxation Tiff…After weeks of heated bickering, the Marina City Council voted July 7 to put a 1-percent sales tax hike on the November ballot. The 4-1 vote, with Frank O'Connell dissenting, reflected a last-minute change of position by Mayor Bruce Delgado. [KA]

 

School Switch…A new law allows students in California’s 1,000 so-called worst schools to jump district lines to enroll in higher performing ones. In Monterey County, where 17 schools are considered among the worst, that could mean a rush to districts like Carmel and P.G. [RU]

 

Chunk Light Red-Listed…Monterey Bay Aquarium has added most canned tuna products to its Seafood Watch "avoid" list. The only exception is canned tuna labeled troll- or pole-caught: White (albacore) makes the "Good Alternatives" list, while light (usually skipjack) ascends to "Best Choices." [KA]
