Jorge Lorenzo was the fastest man on a bike all weekend and brought that feeling into race day, winning after qualifying in the front spot on Saturday.
This marks Lorenzo's sixth GP win in the 2010 season and his first win at the twisty California track, adding to Lorenzo's lead in the championship.
Honda Repsol's Dani Pedrosa was leading the race until his crashed out near the corkscrew.
The Fiat Yamaha rider beat Ducati's Casey Stoner by just over three seconds.
Third place went to Lorenzo's teammate reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi who was looking to podium after last weekend's 4th place in Germany. Rossi broke his leg at his home race at Mugello only six weeks ago and was more than happy with his finish at Laguna Seca, a track he has podiumed at many times, including a win in 2008.
