Steeling for Summer
Higher river flows bode well for steelhead.

Last summer was a tough one for Carmel River steelhead trout. But this year appears to be flowing much better.
"As the summer of 2010 begins we find much better spring conditions on the river than the last few years. We enjoyed late rains in May," writes Frank Emerson of Carmel River Steelhead Association. "Due to higher flows this year we may not have to do nearly as many rescues as we have in the past."
Emerson reports that most Carmel River tributaries, including Garzas and Cachagua creeks, are still flowing well, while some smaller creeks, such as Hitchcock Creek, have begun to dry out. Emerson and two other volunteers recently did a rescue at lower Hitchcock, relocating 52 fry and one yearling.
