Cuts Hit Home
Budget axe falls on the city of Monterey.
Sunday, June 20, 2010
Monterey reports that citizens will soon feel the pain of recent budget cuts, made to cover a $5 million municipal deficit.
In August, the Monterey Public Library will close one day a week, and on June 23, the city's Library Board will considered further cutting library hours.
The city won't celebrate the 4th of July with its customary parade; the municipally-sponsored fireworks display was already eliminated last year, and city officials are warning residents to expect less than meticulous maintenance of parks and street lights because of the budget shortfall.
Later this year, the city will ask residents to participate in setting spending priorities, so that the city can maintain its most important programs while still living within its means.
