Run-off Ahead

Final election results in 15th District Senate race.

Assembly Minority Leader Sam Blakeslee (R-San Luis Obispo) narrowly missed an all-out victory over Aptos Democrat John Laird, a former Assemblyman,  in the June 22 special primary election to replace now Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado for the 15th District senate seat.

The final ballot count shows Blakeslee with 49.49 percent of the vote, just shy of the 50 percent plus one he needed to avoid the August 17 run-off. All four candidates: Blakeslee, Laird, Libertarian Mark Hinkle and Independent Jim Fitzgerald will square off in that contest.

In a statement issued Friday just before the final vote count was released Laird vowed to fight hard to take a message focused on education, jobs, the environment and breaking Sacramento's deadlock to the voters.
