Big Sur Land Trust acquires a new home in downtown Monterey.

The Big Sur Land Trust is moving out of Carmel's Clock Tower Place and into downtown Monterey's First Federal Court Adobe.
BSLT's offices will be at 509 Hartnell Street beginning in September, the nonprofit announced today. The building includes an adobe built in 1841 by Gabriel de la Torre, which may have been the site of California's first federal courthouse. The building subsequently housed a tea room, book shop and professional offices.
“The Land Trust’s Board of Directors unanimously approved this purchase as a smart financial investment and one that will serve our organization, mission, supporters and partners well over the long term,” said George Somero, BSLT board chairman.
BSLT Executive Director Bill Leahy says the move gives the nonprofit a more central presence in its expanded mission to conserve land in Big Sur, Carmel Valley, the Monterey seashore and the Salinas Valley. "The location of the building will also help lessen our environmental impact by reducing a significant number of our staff’s commute miles and drive time from home and to basic services," he adds.
