Green Gold

Step Up 2 Green wins Assembly award.

Investments are less painful when you know they'll pay off. And in this economy, your own home might be safer than Wall Street: Improvements that reduce water and electricity costs can also add property resale value, and jolt the local economy to boot.

StepUp2Green, the locally conceived home eco-certification program, nabbed the California Assembly's 2009 Economic Development Award in the Green category, with support from Assemblyman Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero (D-Salinas).

The accolade signals a good start for 1-year-old SU2G (the Weekly broke news of the program's launch in February 2009). Sixteen local businesses and agencies are signed on to SU2G's directory, and nine local inspectors are licensed to do SU2G inspections. Applicants can also get certified through local planning departments.

Founding partners include Monterey County Business Council, Monterey County Association of Realtors, California American Water Company, Hayward Lumber and the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay.

For now, SU2G is only offered in Monterey County, but program organizers plan to expand to other regions.
