Bummer Budget
Salinas layoffs begin today
Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Starting with one-on-one meetings today, about 40 full-time city of Salinas employees will get pink slips telling them they may be out of a job come June 15. "People are anxious and they want to know sooner, rather than later," says Teri Silva, acting assistant city manager. "We are trying to get those out as quickly as possible to employees."
The layoff notices will trigger the bumping process, where employees with more seniority can compete for lower-level jobs.
The budget cuts, which call for more than 200 positions to be eliminated, are still preliminary, pending the recommendations of a blue-ribbon budget committee, which is hosting its first public meeting 6pm tomorrow at the City Hall Rotunda.
