Thursday, March 18, 2010
The Carmel Bach Festival has announced the programming for its 2010 festival, from July 17-31. The festival, the last that will be under the direction of Music Director Bruno Weil, starts Thursday, July 8, with a free open rehearsal of Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5.'' There will be another free open rehearsal of Bach's "Cantatas 19 & 130'' on Saturday, July 10. Other innovative programming includes the film "El Sistema: Music To Change Life,'' about the efforts to lift children in the slums of Venezuela out of povery through music out of poverty (July 10); a chamber music concert featuring cellist Raphael Wallfisch of Bach's Cello Suites (Church in the Forest, Pebble Beach, July 14); the official "Spirit Triumphant'' opening night recention and concert (July 17; a performance of Bach's "St. Matthew Passion'' (July 18); concertmaster Elizabeth Wallfish's farewell performance, "From One Heart To Many'' (July 23); Weil conducting some of Beethoven's lesser-known works; "Sublime Schubert'' (July 24) and a closing night "Best of the Fest''' concert (July 31).
This represents a rare chance to celebrate Weil's contributions to the festival over the years; and it is not to be missed. For more details, go to: http://www.bachfestival.org.
