Tolerance Rally…CSU Monterey Bay students held a “Death to Discrimination” demonstration March 18 in response to two racist incidents on campus. On March 16 a white student allegedly yelled “f*** you n*****” at a black female student, and the next morning somebody chalked “f*** black people” on the sidewalk. [ZS]
Talking It Out…A settlement could dash prospects of a juicy trial in the lawsuit by on-leave Carmel Human Resources Manager Jane Miller against the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea (alleging smarmy behavior by City Administrator Rich Guillen, which the city denies). Mediation’s set for March 26, and case management for April 2. [KA]
Pot Protest…Passing motorists honked their support for demonstrators at My Caregiver, the Monterey pot co-op that was ordered shut down by a Superior Court judge earlier this month. Co-op members say they can legally keep the doors open pending appeal. [RU]
Props to the Prez…Seaside loves its POTUS. On March 18, the City Council unanimously approved the commemmorative double-naming of Broadway Avenue as Obama Way. The “add-on” signs will be paid for by a citizen group. The Post Office will deliver to both street names. [KA]
Peace Procession…The Catholic Diocese of Monterey and Communities Organized for Relational Power in Action are organizing an anti-gang violence march in Salinas March 27. The procession will stop by the sites of recent homicides and pray. Bishop Richard Garcia will announce the Diocese’s four-point peace strategy. [ZS]
Digging In…The Pacific Grove farmer's market may not be going anywhere. The Everyone's Harvest board decided March 14 not to apply for a use permit modification to move the market from its current digs, Monday evenings on downtown Lighthouse Avenue, to Saturday mornings in a city-owned lot. [KA]
Nursery Rhyme…Steve McShane, owner of McShane's Nursery and Salinas planning commissioner, declared his bid for City Council March 23 on the steps of the National Steinbeck Center. McShane is vying for the South Salinas District 3 seat held by Janet Barnes, who’s running for state Assembly. [ZS]
Flanders Finale…After Superior Court Judge Kay Kingsley saved the 1920s manse from the auction block, Flanders Foundation President Melanie Billig was named Preservationist of the Year by the Association of Monterey Area Preservationists. [RU]
