Budget Battle
County workers protest layoffs.
Wednesday, May 12, 2010
Starting today at 5pm, Monterey County workers will march through the streets of Salinas to protest last week's decision to issue 43 layoff notices.
The Board of Supervisors approved the job cuts to help fill a $21.9 million budget gap next fiscal year.
SEIU members complain that the county hasn't considered the union's proposed $50 million in cost-savings solutions to avoid layoffs. "Cutting workers during a recession will only impact essential services and further hurt the local economy," the union said in a statement. "Fewer jobs means fewer services, and less money circulating through the community."
