South Salinas Showdown

Panzer, Gunter join crowded South Salinas council race.

Joel Panzer and "Papa" Joe Gunter have both announced bids for the South Salinas City Council seat, which is drawing several candidates because incumbent Janet Barnes is vying for the state Assembly.

Panzer, a land-use consultant who lost to Barnes in 2006, says he wants to expand youth programs, move Oldtown and Chinatown redevelopment forward and bring in high-end salaries in line with city's budget constraints.

Gunter, a retired Salinas detective, touts his 40 years of service in the city, from volunteering with the California International Airshow to the Women's Crisis Center. "[Gunter's] board experience and knowledge of the police and fire department functions…and his years of experience on local boards and non-profits, make him uniquely qualified to serve the city as a council member," a campaign statement says.

Nursery owner Steve McShane has also announced a run for the District 3 seat and mortgage banker Brian Showalter has pulled papers to run for the seat in November.
