NPS librarian earns national kudos.

The Naval Postgraduate School dispatches international experts on terrorism, weather systems and engineering from its base in Monterey. But its latest props are for its hushest asset: its librarian.
The Federal Library and Information Center Committee named Eleanor Uhlinger of NPS's Dudley Knox Library as 2009 Federal Librarian of the Year.
Uhlinger "is recognized as a transformational leader who championed the need for the library to be involved in all levels of accreditation, curriculum and program reviews," the FLICC announcement states. "In 2009, she oversaw library renovations to create a combination of quiet and collaborative spaces with technology to enhance learning. Physical and virtual enhancements, coupled with her patron-friendly focus and promotion of staff initiatives, resulted in double-digit increases in in-person reference requests, interlibrary loan and reserve item circulation, with only a limited increase in library expenditures."
One of her admirers, Joe Wible of Hopkins Marine Stations' Harold A. Miller Library, notes Uhlinger's strong background in marine science library management: She formerly headed the Bodega Marine Laboratory Library, the University of Rhode Island's Pell Marine Science Library, the National Sea Grant Library and the Woods Hole Library. Her husband, Dr. Kevin Uhlinger, is a scientist at Hopkins in Pacific Grove.
