Bag ban goes down in the Senate's last hours.

Senate Republicans trashed AB 1998, the high-profile bill that would have banned single-use plastic bags in California, in the final hours of the legislative session last night.

The Assembly had passed the bill in June, and Gov. Arnold Shwarzenegger had indicated his willingness to sign it. Marine conservationists blame plastic bags for contributing to ocean pollution and harming marine animals.

But the American Chemistry Council and the plastics industries it represents had pushed back hard against the bill, claiming it would hurt the economy.

The Senate voted it down 14 to 21 Aug. 31.
