South County Sweep….Soledad, Greenfield, Gonzales and King County police carried out their third joint effort to nab known gang members Sept. 8. By the end of the night, seven individuals were in custody. Police say five have gang ties. [JJB]
Fumigant Under Fire…As the state Department of Pesticide Regulation considers approving methyl iodide, Pesticide Watch is trumpeting a new study showing the controversial strawberry fumigant's potential for air and water contamination. Show Him the Money…State Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell launched a public appeal to push Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign legislation allowing California schools to tap more than $1 billion in federal grants, which the governor did last week before jetting off to an Asian trade mission. [RU]
Fresh Catch…Whole Foods has linked up with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program to launch a sustainability rating system for its seafood. The yuppie-friendly grocery chain has also promised to phase out red-listed fish by Earth Day 2013. [KA]
Scores Score…The Monterey County Office of Education reports most of the county’s students surpassed the performances of their statewide counterparts on state and federal benchmarks this year, as measured by standardized tests. [RU]
Light Speed…A Caltrans maintenance building in Monterey got a boost of sun juice Sept. 7, when the agency's 9.6-kilowatt photovoltaic system went live—part of the agency’s district-wide solar rollout. [KA]
On the Waterfront…Monterey citizen volunteers huddled with city planners for months imagining a better, more inviting waterfront. Their ideas go to the City Council for review next year. [RU]
