Pipeline Probe
Two of PG&E's 100 highest risk gas pipeline segments are in Monterey County.

One of the segments is a 437 foot stretch near Aguajito Road and Highway 68.
The other consists of some 1320 ft. of pipe in a rural area near Hwy 101across from Hartnell Road near Salinas. The company notes that a review of both pipeline segments is in progress so that it can determine if replacement or repair of the pipe is necessary.
A third stretch of risky pipe is near San Juan Bautista—where engineers are already planning to relocate six miles of pipeline between Hwy 152 and Crazy Horse Road because it lies along the San Andreas fault on landslide-prone hillsides.
The utility released the list Sept 20 in the wake of the Sept. 9 gas pipeline explosion that killed at least six people in a San Bruno neighborhood and destroyed 37 homes.
In a news conference, PG&E officials stressed that the top 100 list is a routine maintainance tool and hastened to say that those who live near the risky pipeline segments aren't in danger. The pipeline that exploded in San Bruno was not on the top 100 riskiest list. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blast.
PG&E has established a hotline to tell customers if they live near gas transmission lines or near one of the 100 riskiest pipeline segments. The hotline number is 888-743-7431.
