CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC ART 2011 Juried Competition: Judges Ted Orland, award-winning photographer and former assistant to Ansel Adams, alongside Curator of Photography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Karen Sinsheimer and photographer Huntington Witherill judged nearly 1290 images from 246 photographers. The results are an exhibit that features 48 images from 42 of those artists at the Center for Photographic Art. MONTEREY MUSEUM OF ART-PACIFIC Through watercolors, etchings, photographs and painting, Land and Sea: Paintings and Photographs of Monterey and Beyond explores both the urban and natural landscape that defines the Peninsula. Monterey NOW: Robynn Smith: Colors collide and images marry in chaotic harmony in Robynn Smith’s kinetic creations. Combining painting, print making, and drawing to form intriguing images, the Monterey artist and instructor at MPC was chosen by MMA’s Monterey NOW committee to present her works as part of their series showcasing artists making waves in the Central Coast art world. The works stretch over several decades, and include a film by Eva Lothar, a French cinematographer whose short film, Street of the Sardine, explores Cannery Row after the last cannery shut its doors and ponders man’s responsibility to the world’s natural resources. NATIONAL STEINBECK CENTER Photographer, teacher and lover of nature and form, Al Weber has presented his works and teachings to thousands around the Central Coast. Today marks the end of his most recent show, the Mission San Miguel Arcangel Exhibition. The mission is austere with hints of beauty, and Weber brings out the touches of glory and elegance of this religious relic using his master lens. PEACE RESOURCE CENTER John McCleary, a Californian photographer and journalist, hosts a slide show and discussion of photos from Afghanistan before the war. McCleary frequented a series of anti-war demonstrations across the United States during the 1960s and 70s; his work took him to communes around the world, from Amsterdam to Greece and ultimately Kabul, Afghanistan. His black-and-white photos from there include intriguing shots like the frame of the Bamyan Buddha, which was demolished by the Taliban because Islamic members didn't tolerate another religious shrine. POST RANCH INN Post Ranch hosts two photography shows that traverse the Himalayas. Phil Borges’ show features prints from his book Tibetan Portraits: Power of Compassion, completed with the help of Buddhist monks, with a forward by the Dalai Lama. Profits from the sale these prints go to a non-profit associated called One Heart for Tibetan women’s health issues. The second show, specifically at Sierra Marr restaurant, is by Michelle and Grover Meyrose, who’ve traveled through the Himalayas for 10 years, have compiled photos from Ladakh, Nepal and Bhutan into a show that benefits dZi Foundation, a group that helps improve the lives of people in Himalayan villages. APODACA GALLERY Informalists Reunion Show: The Informalists used to meet in coffee shops in the ‘90s to discuss their artwork and decide where they would paint that day. The group of visionaries created a new form of plein aire work that is expressionist and highly contemporary. Having dispursed, the members now reunite for a Reunion Show at Galerie Plein Aire, which originally opened to showcase the group in 1998, and the neighboring Gallery Apodaca, owned by Informalist Johnny Apodaca. The pieces on display in this show are colorful, moody and expressive, ranging from Cyndra Bradford’s stylized, dramatic prints of horses in local landscapes to Apodaca’s bold, meditative abstracts. CARMEL ART ASSOCIATION November Shows: 40 years after being eligible to join AARP, Gerald Wasserman keeps perfecting his craft. For his 90th Birthday, he created his most recent works. CARMEL MISSION E. Charlton Fortune was a California Impressionist painter who achieved acclaim with her lyrical landscapes, but after studying with Armin Hansen in the 1920s, she settled in Monterey and joined the Carmel Art Association and Monterey Guild, where she created liturgical (religious) works for the remainder of her career. This exhibit, The Liturgical Arts of E. RED MILL Dale Lefler shows his watercolors, which he took up in 1986 and has shown at Alvarado Gallery, the Carmel Foundation and Pacific Grove Art Center. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The part you won’t see and will have to listen to Lefler about, is his storied first career as a dancer. He served as assistant choreographer for Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Lucille Ball, Mickey Rooney. He worked with Gene Kelly and director Vincent Minelli in the 1943 MGM film Best Foot Forward. He studied under Ted Shawn, who Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 1933, making it the longest running dance festival – period. He established a dance studio in Monterey in 1953. SUNSET CENTER A Painter’s Legacy: George De Groat: George De Groat, a Carmel local, painted with colors from the skies, trees, hills, and fields. For forty years he painted a blend of the ordinary with the abstract, creating pieces that form part of many private collections and got him featured in “Who’s Who in American Art”. His work is interesting, thought-provoking and meant to challenge viewers. HIMALAYAN THANGKA ART GALLERY The Tibetan thangka art in this new gallery next to Youth Arts Collective is done by Santoshi Lama and her family – as it has been for four generations – when they were living in Nepal. Thangka is a highly detailed watercolor art that tells the story of gods and goddesses in Buddhist lore. One must be trained in the rules and discipline just to build up the patience to do this type of art (it can take two to three months, at eight hours a day, for a master to complete one work), and once started, a work must be finished. PACIFIC GROVE ART CENTER Though it was programmed months earlier, the four new shows introduced here marks the first under the helm of the new, incoming Executive Director, Jacquelyn Hope. They include En Dehors du Temps (Outside of Time), photographs by Meredith Mullins of Paris, Budapest and Istanbul taken during her extended (four years and counting) stay in Paris. Peter Plamondon’s pen-and-ink drawings of scenes from his travels across the country. They are, at the same time, simple and sophisticated. Monterey’s Robert Armstron, who mostly shows in the Bay Area, uses “paint, kelp, cloth, ceramics, metal, dried fruit, cord and wood” in order to study culture. Finally, four Santa Cruz women photographers collectively working as the Different Directions group put on a show of variety and breadth. ARTISTIC HANGUPS Some of Disney’s best work would not have been the same without Ron Dias. ALTERNATIVE CAFÉ Monterey Pop: Opening night for the new exhibit featuring artists Mark Bode and his father, legendary cartoonist, Vaughn Bode. Mark Bode is best known for Cobalt 60 and his comic Miami Mice. His work has appeared in various publications such as Heavy Metal, Epic Magazine, as well as Penthouse. He has been featured in articles in The New York Times as well as Juxtapoz. His father, Vaughn Bode, was the creator of Cheech Wizard. He had a prolific career publishing a considerable body of work for nearly two decades. His self-published, Das Kampf, was one of the first underground comics in 1963. SEASIDE CITY CENTER New Enterprise: The beacon of modern art that was fine art base, a nonprofit that set up shop in Sand City in March 2009 and curated progressive art shows and gatherings before closing its doors in just under a year, is back. “We don’t need to run a physical space to advance the fine art base mission,” read Elizabeth O’Malley’s notice of the closure of the happening art gallery. They set up shop in the little-used retail space at Seaside’s City Center for the first of a three-part installation called New Enterprise. Phase 1, which opened Friday, May 14, features artists Kris Cowen, San Francisco’s Zachary Royer Scholz and dlwilkinson, showing new work that also reappropriates “sites and materials” in new ways and contexts. Recycling was a big mission of the former fine art base; seems it still is.
