On the heels of a month-long tour through Mexico, hip-hop artist Mike Fernandez, aka Cambio, will lay down new material on his home turf Friday at American Burger along with Dominican native Hache ST, regular collaborator Bocafloja, hip-hop minimalists cihuatl-ce, all-girl Los Angeles duo Guerrilla Queenz and local faves Para la Gente.
Cambio’s new LP I, Too, Sing America – based on a Langston Hughes poem of the same name – was inspired by the poem’s theme: Everyone’s perception of America is different and that’s alright.
“It’s soulful, alternative hip-hop,” Cambio says. “There’s a lot of live instrumentation and there’s guest singers on almost every track.”
“Something to Believe In,” featuring vocals and piano from locally bred talent Andrea Blunt, is a perfect blend of sweet ’90s-style R&B and Cambio’s rhymes drenched with positivity: “The only sacrifices ever made are for our kids/ So we can have a better life than our parents did.”
Though Cambio admits that he isn’t fluent in Spanish, he says people are receptive to music in any language as long as it’s good.
“One of the beautiful things about hip-hop and music in general is that anyone can relate to it,” he says. “That’s probably why I have such a large fan base in Mexico.”
The fan base that welcomes him home will also dig longtime tour partner Bocafloja, a forward-thinking emcee who raps completely in Spanish and can claim cred as one of Mexico City’s preeminent hip-hoppers. Dominican Republic Hache ST will be making its first U.S. tour. All-girl Los Angeles duo Guerrilla Queenz deliver political and socially-charged rhymes in both Spanish and English and Para la Gente (with Cambio on lead vocals) reveal influences ranging from Nas to Rage Against the Machine.
Along with the welcoming reception, Cambio says his second favorite thing about his south-of-the-border tour was the abundance of stellar street food he munched on daily in the old town section of Mexico City. Listeners will find similar flavor in his songs.
The CD release party begins at 8pm Friday, July 15, at American Burger, 738 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey. $10. 373-7573.
