Squid Speaks

HABEAS CORPUZ… Squid could smell blood when Felix Bachofner snatched the Seaside mayorship from Ralph Rubio in November. Bachofner’s campaign was largely bankrolled by Al Glover of Citizens for Transparency in Government, the group united by loathing City Manager Ray Corpuz – so, natch, Felix’s victory doesn’t bode well for the boss.

Soon after taking office, Bachofner started badgering Corpuz for a copy of his last job evaluation, saying he needs to know the metrics in order to prepare for the next one in September. City Attorney Don Freeman countered the new mayor can only review confidential personnel information in the presence of the entire City Council.

So on April 7, Bachofner called a closed session to check out the fated eval. He won’t squeal on what he found, but he offers a carefully diluted dis: “If I have any concern, it would stem from the perception that staff may be resisting… council directions.”

It’s not the kind of Jersey Shore-worthy sh*t-talk Squid was hoping for, but Squid senses Felix is sniffing around for a fireable offense – or maybe trying to make City Hall hostile enough to drive Ray away.

DOING THE RAGSDALE… Squid strained a tentacle lifting Epicure, the official publication of Pebble Beach Food & Wine. Weighing in at 1 pound, 8 ounces, the 258-page advertorial (publishing speak for, “Hey, we’re producing this full-color special because someone paid us,”) boasts recipes, stories and space for wine notes. But Squid needn’t have done so much heavy lifting. Some of the same stories that appeared as advertorial in Epicure also appeared as “journalism” in the Monterey County Herald. As in, the exact same stories. While Herald publisher Gary Omernick deposited the check he got for Epicure, he should have bought a self-inking stamp that reads “Special Advertising Section” for the paper. Or maybe Squid could spit that ink for him?

SEEKING SNYDER… Was he here? That’s the question Squid is asking about Dan Snyder, the Washington Redskins owner whose Dick Clark Productions has a sizeable capital investment in PBF&W. Snyder was at last year’s event, but this time he might have stayed in D.C. to polish his lawsuit against Washington City Paper. The alt-weekly ran a hysterical piece titled “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder.” (One example from the A-Z guide: “Dan-Jazeera: How Al Koken, a former employee of Snyder-owned sports station WTEM, describes the Redskins owner’s media operation.”) Snyder sued, and just refiled that suit to change venues. Snyder’s smart, but reminding people of an article that points out ways he has mangled his football team’s hopes and fans’ dreams isn’t his most genius play ever.
