Brew for You

A tiny and helpful new homebrewer hub opens in Seaside.

Now homebrewers have one more thing to toast: Namely, no more jetting to Santa Cruz for bottle caps or paying more than the cost of your siphoning hose in shipping.

Brand new Bottoms Up Home Brew Supply in Seaside has already stocked a sturdy variety of do-it-yourself beer and wine supplies since its Labor Day opening.

“I just had it inside me to create this place,” says owner Duane Don. “You know when you love to brew and there are others out there like you. And I was tired of shaking my fist in Gilroy [on the way back from Bay Area suppliers] when I realized I’d forgotten yeast or a hop bag.”

Of particular interest among his inventory is the Pacman yeast strain, which will add oomph to a double or imperial IPA. There are also less common extract kits for American cream ale and Russian imperial stout, 47 organic grain varieties, a grain mill, whole flower hops and hop pellets.

The store also stocks Wyeast, pony kegs, CO2 tanks, bottling trees for drying sanitized bottles, and kits to create wines.

“I’m trying to feel out where our brewing community is,” Don says. “So I’m adding new things weekly and biweekly.”

For novice brewers, Don plans to hold brewing classes by Nov. 5, not so coincidentally “National Teach a Friend How to Homebrew Day.” The store also sells Charlie Papazian’s famous home-brewing bible.

Cheers for beers. Hop-ellujah.
