More Funk in the Trunk
There’s plenty more during Car Week to buckle into, and parts of it are free.
Thursday, August 16, 2012
The Car Week lineup event is almost as long as the Tour D’Elegance parade – and growing annually. Here appears a list of increasingly-popular-but-less-publicized events, including those earlier in the week, so car lovers can start planning next year now. After all, some events sell out as early as March.
Concours on the Avenue
More than 175 foreign and domestic cars gather for spectators to dote on their charm. This year’s event focused on muscle cars, luxury cars, hot rods, micro cars and sporting vehicles – all legendary in their own right – that will compete for juried prizes. In addition to criteria like authenticity and provenance, bonus points are awarded for cars that inspired youthful dreams. [HG]
10am-5pm. Tuesday, Aug. 14. Ocean Avenue, Carmel-by-the-Sea. Free. 624-1588, www.carmelconcours.com
Automobilia at Embassy Suites
For the 10th year, the Embassy ballroom transformed into a haven for auto memorabilia enthusiasts – 45 dealers gathered for the largest U.S. event of its kind to peddle vintage paraphernalia and accessories, including posters, plates, badges, hood ornaments, Heuer instruments, models, books, lit, ties and art. Proceeds benefited Monterey Rape Crisis Center. [HG]
10am-6pm, 10am-7pm. Tuesday-Wednesday, Aug. 14-15 Embassy Suites, 1411 Canyon Del Rey, Seaside. $15 for one day, $20 for two days. 393-1115, www.automobiliamonterey.com
The Little Car Show and Parade
The third annual featured British fossil fueled vehicles under 1,601 cc and electric vehicles, too. Owners compete for trophies such as “Most Smiles per Mile” and “Mayor’s Choice,” and can also have their lil’ roadsters weighed for a $20 donation. Writer-illustrator Tad Burness and auto collector Jack Passey sign their books and present trophies to class winners. A scenic parade follows the showcase as the pint-sized possessions cruise from Lovers Point to Asilomar Beach to the view of a sunset-stricken waterfront. [HG]
Noon-5pm. Wednesday, Aug 15. Lighthouse Avenue between Fountain and 16th, Pacific Grove. Free. www.marinamotorsports.com
Tour d’Elegance
The Concours-affiliated tour uses the Peninsula as a backdrop for beautiful cars in motion with a run along the cypress forests and dramatic cliffs of 17 Mile Drive to the crescent bay of Carmel. Drivers pause for lunch and then, upon returning to Pebble Beach, reward themselves with a champagne toast. [JB]
8am/tour departs Pebble Beach; noon-2pm; display on Ocean Avenue in Carmel. Route begins at Collins Field. Thursday, Aug. 16. Free to observe. Cars on display at www.pebblebeachconcours.net for map and more.
Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally
Traditionally geared for classic, vintage and sports cars, this year the rally gives a nod to Volkswagen. The legacy of cute and curvy cars pioneered air-cooled technology and marketed their unusually small but speedy cars with an air of amusement. Notoriously easy to fix, they have survived well in car circles with a menagerie of models, from the bus to the amphibious Schwimmwagen. At the rally a blue ’71 Karmen Ghia cabriolet stars: the car combined the chassis and mechanics of a Type 1 Beetle with the Italian body stylings of the Italian carrozzeria that brought Ferrari and Porsche into high fashion. [JB]
1-6pm tour; 7pm barbecue dinner. Friday, Aug. 17. Lighthouse and Forest, Pacific Grove; Chautauqua Hall, Central Avenue at 17th, Pacific Grove. $90/to drive; $105/drive and dinner; $20/dinner; $15/children 12 and under dinner. 372-6585. www.pgautorally.org
Meyers Manx at Museum of Monterey
On loan from Bruce Meyers, the creator of the Manx, the 1967 Meyers Manx dune buggy – aka “Old Red” – will be on display through Aug. 19. The Californian engineer, boat builder and surfer created the iconic dune buggy, affixing its characteristic fiberglass shell over a Volkswagen beetle frame and engine. It continues to be built in California today, and has been popularized by its appearances in Elvis movies and the Thomas Crown Affair. [JB]
10am-5pm. Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 14-19. 5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey. $10/general; $5/student, military, senior. 372-2608, www.museumofmonterey.org
Pebble Beach Retro Auto
We all have aspirations of elegance. If your car is part of the plan, it may find a place at the entrance to the Concours d’Elegance, where the RetroAuto pavilion is stocked with rare collectibles and memorabilia from automotive history, auto accoutrements and luxury goods. A baggie from here could contain auto parts, tools, some auto fine art or even a poster. The pavilion also hosts parties throughout car week for more automotive indulgence. [JB]
10am-5pm Fri and Sat; 8am-6pm Concours Sunday. RetroAuto Pavilion, Pebble Beach. www.pebblebeachconcours.net
Ferrari Event at the Barnyard
Nothing beats food, booze and cars, especially when it’s in the name of charity. Wine and dine amidst a unique display of Ferraris to a musical sound track while gazing at the incomparable marque. A variety of raffle prizes are up for grabs; all proceeds benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. [HG]
4-7pm. Saturday, Aug 18. Barnyard Shopping Village, 3618 The Barnyard, Carmel. $30. 624-8886, www.thebarnyard.com
