Best Do-Gooder in a PR Pickle (2012)
Monterey-Salinas Transit
1 Ryan Ranch, Monterey
1-888-MSTBUS1, www.mst.org
MST is taking its share of lumps for its ham-handed and bull-headed pursuit of the Whispering Oaks site for its new yard and transit center. Their inability to gauge the political winds is a bit disconcerting, but let us not forget that MST did provide folks in the county with a ride 4.5 million times last year. They did it on time, for a fair price and in comfort and safety. MST has a cool and accurate widget on their digital sites so riders know when and where they can catch a bus, but it is the friendly and helpful disposition of the “coach operators” dealing with the assortment of riders that earns them a Best Of. I’ll wager you your bus fare that the next time you get on a bus the driver says hello when you board and thank you when you disembark. That, my friends, is not-so-common common courtesy delivered in the express lane.
