Best Appetizers/Small Plates (2012)

Mundaka

San Carlos between Ocean and Seventh, Carmel

624-7400,

www.mundakacarmel.com

Mundaka in Spain’s Basque country is known for its huge world-class surf; Mundaka in Carmel is known for its Spanish-inspired small plates. The stylish apps at this stylish spot include the incomparable jamon serrano, the cordero (thin-cut lamb chops, fries, and herb oil), perfectly roasted padron peppers and $2 pintxos at the bar. Along with beer and reasonably priced Spanish wines, sangria is also on the drink menu. Every Monday (Peter Evans on flamenco guitar), Thursday (DJ Hanif Wondir), and Saturday (DJ Green Up Sound) music pops as much as the tapas. Owner Gabe Georis and Chef Brandon Miller are just two of the hospitality pros that make this place go, and make it arguably the liveliest place in town.
