Best Artist (2012)
David Ligare
At various times, David Ligare’s work can be found in New York at the Museum of Modern Art; in Florence, Italy, at the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi; in London at Plus One Gallery; and in Sacramento’s Crocker Museum. It’s testament to the conceptual strength and artistic training that he meticulously coaxes into his neo-classical paintings. And it’s testament to his devotion to Monterey County that he lives and shows here regularly, and promotes other artists—including the graffiti of the @risK Gallery kids—as much as his own acclaimed work. His main thesis is faithfully reproducing Greco/Roman scenes and figures in narrative paintings that are a thoroughly modern counterpoint to abstract and contemporary art. If there are no rules, the most radical thing, then, are rules.
