Best Burger (2012)

r.g. Burgers

201 Crossroads Shopping Village, Carmel, 626-8054

570 Munras Ave., Monterey, 372-4930

www.rgburgers.com

The parking lot at the Monterey outpost of r.g. Burgers requires a little bit of ruthlessness. To get to the burger of your dreams – whether beef, bison, turkey, chicken or falafel – you’ll have to battle Trader Joe’s hipsters and Peet’s-seeking latté jockeys as part of the not-enough-parking-spaces-meets-too-many-cars experience. Stalk well, because the burger will be worth the struggle. Flame-broiled to a good char on the outside, the r.g. (yes, for God’s sake, it stands for real good) burger comes in 22 varieties. The starters and sides are plentiful (a basket of onion rings is more than enough for sharing) and the service lightning quick – your glass will never stay empty for more than a few seconds. If you’re out and about with a friend who eschews burgers, don’t eschew r.g.: In addition to the meat/bun experience, there are 18 sandwiches, a half-dozen hot-dog offerings and a long list of salads. Real good for real.
