Terry Teplitzky was the ultimate kitchen brat, growing up working in his family’s hotel and restaurant on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. But after snagging a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, the classically trained chef headed west, evolving the deli genre of his upbringing and making it his own. Sure, you can get a good pastrami sandwich or Atlantic City Sub loaded with Italian cold cuts at his Wild Thyme Deli, but you can also get wok-seared veggies and tofu, served with brown rice, or a seared Arctic char with a side of green bean, tomato and cucumber salad, from his catering wing, Michael’s Catering. A clever “Family Fridays” in-house deal offers up board games, music and homey comfort food like roast chicken and vegetables, meatloaf and mashers or a veggie paella (all served with salad and dessert) for $50 for a family of four. Give him a few hours and Teplitzky can cater your office lunch. Give him longer than that, and he can cater a wedding for hundreds of people or a corporate barbecue for many more than that.
