Down the road from DLI, Compagno’s flavorful victory over hunger is a daily landslide for local residents and military students alike. The corner-market style deli pays homage to its sizable armed forces patronage not only with a hodgepodge of military decor, but also with a specialty sandwich for each branch of the service (The Air Force, for example, enjoys turkey breast, cranberry sauce and cream cheese loaded with all the traditional deli fixings.) Most would agree the quality is matched by quantity – these sammies are gigantic. Almost as legendary as the food is owner and all-around nice-guy, Bennett Compagno, who’s usually around with a smile and a handshake to make eaters feel at home. Four more words: chocolate peanut butter cake. Definitely worth an enthusiastic salute.
