Best Family Restaurant (2012)

Rosine’s

434 Alvarado St., Monterey

375-1400

www.rosinesmonterey.com

Rosine’s, based in the heart of Oldtown Monterey, has been filling bellies with hearty, homey meals in a bustling-but-comfortable open-air space since 1980. This is big-plate, appetite-squashing food: mounds of eggs benedicts, “outrageous” omelettes, stacks of sandwiches like the two-patty-French-roll Ultimate Burger and New York Steak Sandwich, Italian grandma-approved heaps of pastas, chicken piccata, pork chops, little forests of salads and hearty steaks. This food is so beloved by hungry families that it’s been voted Best Family Restaurant since memory, and its cookbook, Rosine’s Cuisine, as of earlier this month, was sold out. And we haven’t even talked about the desserts yet (see Specialty Foods).
