Best Headshop (2012)

Mary Jane’z Novelties

744 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey

333-0331

In January of 1966, Ron and Jay Thelin opened the Psychedelic Shop on Haight Street in San Francisco. The first ever headshop was flooded with hallucinogenic paraphernalia, mandala-adorned walls, a meditation room and incense-flooded air. These days, you can find a headshop in just about every town, with a focus on smoking apparati (or—for legal purposes—“tobacco water pipes”). Mary Jane’z prides itself as one of the few establishments in northern California peddling the made-in-Germany, glass-blown, 1000ml Hurricane. The concoction boasts a uniquely elaborate filtration system that purifies the experience of every inhalation. A lot’s changed in 40 years.
