Best Rock Venue/Best Art Gallery (2012)

Alternative Cafe

If you didn’t know about the work ethic, creative resources and human capital that make this cafe/gallery go, you might be surprised by Alt Cafe’s three Best Of wins. (They also took Best Place to Read the Weekly in the Around Town section.) But this three-peat is well earned. Since they opened in 2007, the gallery has brought in a steady diet of tasty underground art, drawing standout artists from the big California cities, our own boroughs and even internationally. The art openings are parties, stocked with artists and scenesters, the curious and the wacky. This underground art stuff is not everyone’s cup of joe, but the fans are plentiful and loyal. They also overlap with the hot music scene that Alt Cafe has built up. Take a look at the crowded calendar of events hung over the counter and you’ll understand that the place books fresh crops of musicians more regularly than any other venue in the county. Proprietor Scott Grover cut out part of the back wall and installed a recessed stage for live shows. That’s the type of commitment that pays. Sometimes three-fold.
