Jane Parker and Byrl Smith are leading fundraisers in the the supervisors races (where three of five seats are up for election June 5) this spring, each already having spent in the six-figures by March 17, the most recent reporting period deadline.

But with years of fundraising behind her, Parker ended March with nearly six times the money in the bank Smith has. This is Smith's first competitive race for office; she was appointed to a vacant seat on the Monterey County Board of Education in 2006, then ran unopposed in 2009 for the four-year term she's currently serving at the board of ed. Smith transferred about $750 from her Board of Ed campaign fund to the District 4 contest.

Parker raised about $73,500 from January through March, leaving her with a plush $161,400 in the bank. Smith, who raised nearly $78,000 in the same period, ended with a cash balance of $28,000.

Parker's contributions include mostly $100-200 gifts from residents of District 4 and District 5 (including Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove and stretching down the coast including Carmel Valley and Big Sur). She received larger gifts from several sources including Julie Packard, executive director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium ($2,500); The Democratic Women of Monterey County ($1,000); and the Lowel Figen Trust in Monterey ($5,000).

Parker took in nearly $264,000 in the second half of 2011, with her largest contributions of $25,000 each coming from the Howard & Lynn Ann Classen Trust in Royal Oaks and the Wheeler Family Trust in Carmel.

She also brought in from $10,000 from the Monterey-based North Salinas Valley Fund for Responsible Growth, a corporation registered by Julie Engell.

Parker also received $5,000 each from Nader Agha's Moss Landing Commercial Park, and San Jose-based UCP, the developer behind the East Garrison residential development.

Smith's campaign received about a quarter of its gifts from ag leaders and businesses countywide, including Driscoll's ($1,000); Scheid Vineyards ($3,200); Rick Antle of Tanimura & Antle ($1,000); D'Arrigo Bros. ($2,500) plus another $1,000 from vice president Margaret D'Arrigo; Mann Packing ($1,000); Growers Jerry Rava Jr. and Sr. ($5,000 collectively); and two San Ardo ranchers (a total of $3,500), among others.

Smith's largest 2012 gift, $10,000 came from Steinbeck County Produce. In 2011, Smith took in her largest contributions to date: $16,000 from Monterey County Business PAC, whose members include Monterey County Hospitality Association and Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce, and $20,000 from Salinas Valley Leadership Group.

The Seaside City Center Project has donated space for Smith’s campaign office, valued at about $3,100 a month.

Smith also received a donation from East Garrison developer UCP of $2,500. Other businesses that have given to her campaign include Monterey Plaza Hotel, Cannery Row Company, California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Paul Bruno and his company Monterey Peninsula Engineering, Ord Market, the CEO of fumigator Trical, Old Fisherman's Grotto and Fish Hopper.

Candidates and public officials who have given to Parker include County Water Resources Agency board member Claude Hoover; Regina Doyle, former Monterey Peninsula Water Management District board member; MPWMD board member Kristi Markey (also an aide to Parker); and Santa Cruz County Supervisor and Assembly candidate Mark Stone.

Candidates and officials who gave to Smith's campaign include Marina City Councilwoman Nancy Amadeo; MPWMD board member and former P.G. mayor Jeanne Byrne, who ousted Doyle in November; Monterey County Superintendent Nancy Kotowski; former County Supervisor Edith Johnsen; Del Rey Oaks Mayor Jerry Edelen; Seaside City Councilmen Steve Bloomer and Dennis Alexander; and former Seaside City Councilman Tom Mancini.

Pacific Grove Mayor and candidate for District 5 Supervisor Carmelita Garcia contributed $100 to each campaign.

The next campaign finance reports are due May 24, less than two weeks before the election.
