Make it Snappy

Monterey County offered up a wide range of emotions in 2012.

Whenever someone says Monterey County is boring, I laugh. There was a lot to see in the county last year.

On the fun side, September caught a glimpse of the space shuttle Endeavor’s last trip. The month before, Mumford & Sons rocked the Monterey County Fairgrounds during a stop on the Gentlemen of the Road tour. All year, wine flowed to match tasty plates for the plethora of great food produced and served in and around Monterey County.

Despite all the good times, Monterey County was not without its share of political drama, crime waves and personal turmoil. Water desal got dirty in the courtroom, while gun and gang violence rose in Seaside and Salinas.

Not all of my favorite images were of well-known characters. Some of my top shots came by accident, like backstage at the mariachi festival where a pair of violin players shared a hearty laugh, or baker Yann Lusseau plopping out meringues in his kitchen. Early in the year I shot Jerry Forbes cleaning hotel chimneys on Cannery Row with the bay in the background.

This year will also bring lots to photographs. I hope that, like me, you will all keep your eyes open to the possibilities around us.
