Best Mexican (2013)

Peppers MexiCali Cafe

170 Forest Ave., Pacific Grove

373-6892

www.peppersmexicalicafe.com

Hawaiian swordfish, Jamaican curry prawns and jambalaya are probably not the first dishes you’d think a Mexican restaurant would serve. But the Pacific Grove mainstay isn’t afraid of going outside of the below-the-border culinary box. Don’t fret; the menu is also stocked with all the traditional Mexican faves—with Peppers’ unique twist—like the Santa Fe cheese enchilada platter, Mission District burrito platter, and fall-off-your-fork-tender chili verde fajitas. If you dig spicy, you’ll want to order some housemade Melinda’s habanero sauce. The right margarita is there to cool off the taste buds, and there are eight original concoctions to choose from, including the dangerously delicious ultimate with Patron Reposado, Citronage orange liqueur, La Belle orange cognac, lemon and lime juice.
