"This budget is kind of like the good, the bad and the ugly," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said at a press conference this morning after signing a state budget that cut more than $16 billion in spending.
"I had to go in over this weekend with my team and make additional cuts, if it is in parks, child welfare services, Healthy Families, the office of AIDS prevention and treatment, the Williamson Act [for land conservation], and the list goes on and on and on," he said. "That's ugly."
Schwarzenegger whittled the already-diminished state parks budget by an additional $6 million, bringing the total General Fund parks cut to more than $14 million. Save the Redwoods League estimates the cuts could result in the closure of more than 100 parks.
