9,401: The number of people who disposed of household hazardous waste like paints, oils, fertilizers and sprays safely, legally and for free at the Monterey Regional Waste Management District last year, an all-time high. California has made it illegal to trash many common household items like fluorescent lightbulbs and batteries. Source - MRWMD spokesman Jeff Lindenthal.
