Row Crop: Anthony Swofford says his earliest inspiration to become a writer came from John Steinbeck. “I was 14 and we took a family trip to Monterey. Cannery Row was my favorite book, but the Cannery Row Steinbeck created was so much more fascinating and compelling than the one I was experiencing,” he says.
