May 20, 2011
Reports of an ill dog in Missouri after eating pig ear treats has led to a recall by the manufacturer—possibly due to Salmonella.
Diggers Natural Chews pig ear treats are possibly contaminated with Salmonella according to the Monterey County Health Department. Boss Pet Products, the manufacturer of the pig ears, distributes the treats to 19 states including California.
Salmonella can be contracted by humans through contact with the treats as well as affect hapless animals that ingest contaminated treats. The bacteria causes diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever in humans. Animals may have bloody stool and become lethargic if infected.
