Virtuoso Pipe Organist James Welch Performs at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salinas

A pipe organ is the only single instrument that can come close to matching the harmonic qualities and richness of a symphony orchestra. But this is only true if the player has the skill to harness its awesome auditory power. James Welch has that power and he will be exhibiting it when he performs at St. Paul's Epsicopal Church in Salinas on Saturday, June 30, at 6pm.
Welch, who joined the music faculty of Santa Clara University in 1993 and serves as organist at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto, adds another dimension to his perfomance by providing a large-screen video projection so attendees can have a close-up view of how he works his magic.
A member of the American Guild of Organists, his many travels, studies, publications and performances makes him an authority on many styles of organ music and he draws praise for his technical skills, musicianship and creativity. Latin American organ music will be the theme of Saturday's recital and in keeping with the flavor of the event, a Mexican food fiesta with traditional dancing will follow. Proceeds from the fiesta benefit Iglesia San Pablo and St. Paul's Food Pantry.
