Little Hidden Flavor Hub Proves Ideal for Holiday Inspiration, Particularly This Weekend
November 7, 2011
Just east of Carmel Valley Road, right in the heart of Carmel Valley Village, a quick turn from the CHP office, hides a family-owned flavor hub of foodie and decorative dreams worth hitting the brakes for any day of the week.
Baum & Blume (659-0400) has been tucked in the humble little storefront cheffing up creative tastes and curating clever gifts for more than a quarter century, and though any local worth her fine red wine and red pepper coulis knows their catering and retail acumen is excellent, and that the shop is stuffed with ideas and edibles and other accents, it's an easy spot to miss.
It gets harder to miss this weekend with a free holiday open house happening 11am-7pm Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12-13.
A range of small-plot California wineries rotate through every two hours for tastings. Complimentary housemade snacks circulate all day (think autumn mushroom pate and Southwestern green chile tarts). Demos like an instructional on nori-crusted salmon with finger lime pearls make it all the more educational. People populate the kitchen and the cute patio in the back.
As B&B show annually, you don't stick around our competitive catering scene for almost half a century (as they have) without learning how to throw a nice shindig.
They get it, and do dynamite gift basket and pre-prepped party snacks with the best of them too.
Inspiration and flavor come automatic with this one.
