Community Supported Fishery Local Catch Monterey Bay Announces Start of Signups, Winter Season

In August the Weekly broke news of a group of pioneering, ocean-minded locals launching a CSA-style cooperative through which seafood lovers purchase shares of fresh, local sustainable catches.

At that point, Local Catch Monterey Bay (345-5153) project principals Oren Frey and Alan Lovewell were gauging whether there was enough consumer interest by way of sign-ups. Apparently there was: Today they sent out word to folks like me who added their names to the interested list that they are ready to begin accepting memberships and payments for a season that will run Jan. 17-April 3.

The email promises pick-up locations in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. "Dungeness crab, black cod, Pacific herring, sand dabs..." it reads. "These are just a few seafood items that may be offered during the winter season. Our seafood will be compatible with sustainable seafood guidelines, such as those of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program."

Register now at www.localcatchmontereybay.com. Members can select from eight different delivery hubs, including CSUMB Greenhouse, downtown Carmel, Lokal in Carmel Valley, Monterey Institute of International Studies and Pacific Grove Adult School; if sites do not enroll a minimum of 10 members, though, they may be consolidated. The pickup window is 4-8pm Tuesday.

Small shares run $20 and equate to "one type of fish or shellfish each week, and it will be enough to generously feed two people. For weeks with filleted fish, this typically means 1-1.5 pounds." Family shares are $40 to feed four well with 2.5-3 pounds.

Shares are limited, so interested parties should splash in soon.
