Top Foodie Events for 2012: Save the Date, and Your Appetite

For a minute, the moist masses who have come to swear by the Big Sur Chanterelle Festival and Cook-off were trembling like candy caps in a downpour: The fest was dead, buried by complications in funding and hosting.

Only now a community group, buoyed by the timely teamwork of Ventana Inn and Spa (677-2331), is ready to make sure the shroom show goes on.

That's but one highlight in a foodie event year littered with them.

Best in the Blue, for instance, is back for year two of food trucks and tastings at the airport hanger in Monterey. Russell Joyce, who's attended roughly 2.2 trillion wine events on behalf of his family's winery, called it "the best wine-centric event I can remember." High praise.

In year five, meanwhile, look for Pebble Beach Food & Wine to do more cutting-edge celeb-chef experiences and wild post parties than ever.

The following month, Cooking for Solutions' gala will sell out...again. Tickets for members, in fact, go on sale Monday.

With the following dates in mind, I think the magic words for the local and regional munchers out there is "Save the date."
